Equipment & Repairs 2018/19

26.04.2018; Strande

Sprayhood replaced

New sprayhood added with bars on the side to improve safety when walking from cockpit to bow

Tender Highfield UL260 Hypalon

We sold the original dinghy, which seemed way too heavy (Caribe; ca 50kg) and replaced it with a new, very light tender (30kg). Now 2 persons can carry the tender including outboard ashore.

Batteries 6x Varta LA95

Replaced the engine and service batteries after ca 6 years; we increased the number of service batteries to 5 resulting in a total capacity of 475Ah. Unfortunately size oft he box in the bilge limits choice.

Masthead Light & cables, VHF antenna

We replaced the masthead light with a fancy Lopolight model, including cabling. Also VHF antenna and cable were replaced.

Lofrans windlass switches

Installed switches (push buttons) right on the deck which allow operation of the windlass directly from the bow without having to feed the console and cable outside through the hatch.

Rigg i.e. shrouds & stays replaced

We replaced the complete wiring holding the mast ; usually this should be done every 10-15 years, our rig was already almost 20 years old (though still looked good). Big hassle to undo the furling drums of the headsails … screws had to be drilled out. Also the joints were replaced between boom and mast. On top we added 2 steps underneath the top of the mast to make maintenace work up there more comfortable.

14.05.2018 ; Kiel Schwentine

Main & Head Sails replaced including Lazybag

After almost 20 years we got new, very solid main and head sails made of Hydranet/Dacron made by Faber & Müncker in Kiel. Also a new Lazybag was added to fit the mainsail in, including Shiva’s logo on the outside.

Halyards main, spi & dirk replaced

Another 3 lines were replaced using Lyros 12mm rope.

Life raft revised

The Plastimo life raft was revised to continue its service for another 3 years.

Fire Extinguishers 2x

We replaced the fire extinguishers with 6lt foam models; the exisiting powder extinguishers were out of date and would have created more damage than help.

Nanni Diesel engine revised; Fuel pump installed

We had the mechanic to review the engine. He disassembled the heat exchanger, cleaned the tube stack and mounted everything again. We then also added an electric fuel pump to avoid air getting into the engine (which happened quite often after sailing).

Solar panels Sunware 4x 50W

We added solar panels which go onto the bimini to get some more electricity, in particular while at anchor

NOK

Speakers Cockpit replaced

I replaced the speakers in the cockpit under way through the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (NOK). The old ones were gone…

03.06.2018; Baltrum

Reef lines

Replaced the 2 reef lines of 1st and 2nd reef

06.06.2018;
Leeuwarden

Wood of benches, cokpit hatch,  etc. painted

We applied some special oil to all the wood exposed to the sun in the cockpit and on deck. We repeated this  every year so far and it looks quite good.

Nanni Diesel engine: heat exchanger  broke

Shortly after leaving Cherbourg harbour I noticed, that there was no sea water flushing from the cooling circuit. Hence I stopped the engine, dropped the anchor and checked the engine room. The heat exchanger was broken and the bilge was flooded with sea water. I had to order and install a new tube stack, which kept us a week in Cherbourg.

Brest

Alternator replaced

The sea water flush from the broken heat exchanger damaged also the alternator. I got a new one and replaced it. Then I had the old one revised and that one now serves as a spare.

12.08.2018; Vigo

Painting of various damages on deck

The white paint on deck tends to flourish and come off, in particular in places where the aluminium is in contact with other metal (e.g. inox screws). Hence screws need to be properly isolated (Tefgel, Duralac) and numerous spots need to be repainted every year.

25.01.2019; Martinique

Battery charger Victron IP22 added

I installed a second battery charger as a backup and to improve charging efficiency in parallel to the existing, 20 year old Cristec charger.

28.01.2019; Martinique

Fridge modified to fresh water tank & evaporator

We replaced the very inefficient Isotherm cooling element with a 3x larger evaporator panel in the fridge. Then we modified the cooling circuit from sea water to use the fresh water tank after replacing all hoses and valves. Since then we have no more issues with jammed hoses from sea shells or algae, and the fridge is now perfectly cold up to the top.

05.06.2019;
Horta

Main sheet blocks replaced

The blocks holding the boom (hence the main sheet) were gone after the passage back across the Atlantic

19.08.2019; Ameglia resp.
24.06.2020

Standard maintenance

Watermaker membranes cleaned & conserved; filter replaced

Sea water circuit rinsed on engine & generator
Oil & filters & impeller replaced on engine & generator; Outboard rinsed, oil change
Anodes (zinc) replaced on propeller, rudders, keel and hull
Antifouling SeaJet 034 applied (instead of former Trilux 33)

Plus new

Gastank Alu 13kg

We purchased an alu gas tank, which can be refilled under way with propane. Campingaz tanks are much more expensive and sometimes hard to get in remote areas.

Brompton foldable bikes 2x

These bikes can be stowed in the cabin and transported even in the dinghy to shore. On shore they allow us to explore the area or to go shopping

Cobb Table BBQ set

Great compact BBQ, which doesn’t get hot on the outside and can be used in the cockpit.
